Feel free to share your favorite finds of the week using the comment link found at the bottom of this post. Once again, in no particular order, I am posting my favorite bookmarked sites and videos of the week…

  1. HASTAC (“haystack”) is an acronym for Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Advanced Collaboratory. It is “a network of individuals and institutions inspired by the possibilities that new technologies offer us for shaping how we learn, teach, communicate, create, and organize our local and global communities.” This is a rich resource site full of thoughtful articles, blog postings, projects and more. Join and participate…registration and membership is free.
  2. Twistori is a fascinating, ever-changing page “based on twitter. inspired by wefeelfine. hand-crafted by amy hoy and thomas fuchs of slash7.” Click on a word to see a feed of twitters that include the word…not a site for displaying in the classroom, but an interesting social experiment and a random snapshot of what people are thinking at any given moment. The site is also available as a mac screensaver.
  3. WOW Tenspace – I doubt you have visualized counting like this…a great video to share with students learning their numbers.
  4. akapostakapost is an innovative email service to protect your email identities from being exposed on the Internet. Use this free application to send and receive email from your existing email account, but still keep your actual email address private. No download or installation required…just register your email address and begin!
  5. Hacking Knowledge: 77 Ways to Learn Faster, Deeper, and Better – I learned about this oldie, but goody article posted on the Online Education Database via twitter friend Russel Tarr…good information to share with your students.
  6. Sand Fantasy – a fascinating art form…sand art from Ilana Yahav. You can see more video clips in her website: http://www.sandfantasy.com.
  • Find Creative Commons images with [Google] Image Search – a great strategy to teach students (provided Google images is available in your district)
  • 50 Awesome Ways to Use Skype in the Classroom – an excellent post found on the Teaching Degree.org Blog…read through the ideas and consider how they might apply in your classroom.
  • Textmaker Viewer 2009 [Final Beta] - this free viewer download from SoftMaker that lets you open, view, and print documents created with Microsoft Word 6.0 to 2007, TextMaker as well as OpenDocument and other common office file formats.
  • Skype and Author Network – ” Wouldn’t it be great to invite authors into your classroom or library to video chat with students before, during, and/or after you’ve read their books?” This wiki site features a growing list of authors who are willing to video conference with students. See the alphabetical list in the scrolling author box on the left. Read on to find out just how easy it is!”
