First Days

Welcome to the beginning of a new school year!  The start of school has always signified a new beginning for me — more so than the first day of the New Year. As a child I couldn’t wait to jump on the bus to see my friends and start the school year. When my children started school I was excited for them, but felt remorse at seeing them grow so quickly. As an educator I always begin the school year with anticipation and a new resolve to make this school year the best one ever. I came across the following passage a few years ago. Please consider it virtual survival kit to help you as you start this new and exciting school year.  You might like to share it with your students as a team building activity.

The penny is to remind you that you are valuable,

The star is to remind you to always try your best,

The eraser is to remind you that it’s okay to make mistakes,

The life saver is to let you know that you can always talk to me,

The tissue is for drying your tears and those of others,

The band-aid is to let you know that together we can make things better,

The chocolate hug is to remind you that you are cared for,

The sticker is to remind you that we always stick together.

If you are an elementary teacher I would suggest that you check out the Back to School postings at the ProTeacher Directory…you will be able to read through some great ideas posted by veteran teachers.

Middle school teachers will find a wealth of articles with advice for the beginning of the school year, classroom management, and new teachers at the MiddleWeb’s site.  Check out the “Million Words” assignment found in the First Days of Middle School section…it’s a real winner!

You might also find the following past posts helpful, especially if you are a new teacher….
